It’s easy to romanticize a big victory when the reference point is a history of failure.

The celebration of the Cardinals’ 24-17 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday night is about more than that. The performance was pivotal because it spoke as much about the future as it did the past.

Only two of the Cardinals’ 10 remaining games are against teams with winning records. Their next five opponents – Carolina, Chicago, Seattle, St. Louis and Tennessee – are a combined 7-24. In this bizarre NFL season riddled with have-nots, the Cardinals will benefit from having the 0-7 Rams on their schedule twice and the 0-6 Titans and 1-5

Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt gave his players the day off on Monday. No doubt they deserved it.

The Cardinals’ 24-17 victory over the New York Giants Sunday night was one of the biggest regular-season wins in the franchise’s 22 years in Arizona.

“Outside of the playoffs last year, we haven’t had a lot of quality wins, wins against tough opponents, teams that are playing really well,” quarterback Kurt Warner said afterward. “Those are kind of statement games, where you gain confidence, and you feel like you can compete with anybody.”

The Cardinals have for years been awful away from home, especially on trips to the East, but Sunday’s victory made Arizona 3-0 on the road this season. It’s the first time the Cardinals have won three in a row on the road since 1987.

Finally, the Arizona Cardinals are looking like the team that rolled through the playoffs to the Super Bowl – just in time for a Sunday night matchup with the perturbed New York Giants.

Arizona’s dominating 27-3 victory in Seattle on Sunday marked the first time this season the inconsistent Cardinals have put together a complete game.

Linebacker Karlos Dansby says the performance gives the team momentum and “a lot of confidence. He says the team knew it had the ability, and to finally see it come through on the field was a good feeling.
