Williams Goes To Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals chose defensive tackle Dan Williams of Tennessee with the No. 26 overall pick in the NFL
draft.

The team needed defensive help at several positions, and nose tackle was certainly one of them. Last year’s starter, Bryan Robinson, was not re-signed and Alan Branch was shifted to defensive end. That left Gabe Watson the only nose tackle on the roster.
The 6-foot-3, 327-pound Williams started all 13 games for the Volunteers last season with 70 tackles, 36 solos.
Williams could start alongside Pro Bowler Darnell Dockett and Calais Campbell on the Cardinals’ defensive line.

Source: 2-year deal worth $7.25M

The Arizona Cardinals and former Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson have agreed to a two-year contract worth $7.25 million, a source told ESPN.com Wednesday.

The source said the deal includes $3.25 million guaranteed, and with incentives would max out at $18.25 million.

Anderson would compete with current Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart for the starting job.

Arizona’s deal for Anderson came on the heels of free-agent quarterback Charlie Whitehurst telling San Diego Chargers management earlier Wednesday that he will sign a one-year restricted free-agent tender offer. The development will allow the Chargers to begin trade talks on his behalf, a source told ESPN.com’s John Clayton.

Whitehurst has indicated he prefers to go to Seattle, according to a source; at one time, Whitehurst, who is a restricted free agent with third-round compensation, was considered a possibility to connect with the Cardinals. Because the Seahawks don’t have a third-round choice, the Chargers and the Seahawks would have to work out a trade.

Warner’s Injury Shows Deeper Issues

When it comes to important issues, the NFL rarely organizes a parade, but it does a fine job of making its way to the front after one has started.

That was the case when the league was pushed to hire more minority head coaches and general managers. And it’s true now with the discussion about head injuries.

But it’s better to participate in the parade, even if you’re a late entrant, than to close the office drapes and pretend it’s not happening.

The league faces an inherent problem in protecting players from the long-term effects of head injuries: the players themselves. The Cardinals could serve as a case study this season.

Last week, quarterback Kurt Warner agonized about whether he should be honest with the team’s medical staff and tell them about the symptoms he was feeling a week after suffering a concussion.

Warner admitted he “wrestled” with the question as he was making his way to the meeting to decide his availability to play Sunday. He ultimately decided not to play.

Cardinals’ Boldin can’t practice on sprained ankle

Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin didn’t practice Wednesday, three days after aggravating his sprained right ankle.

Boldin said Monday that he hoped to play this weekend against the Bears, and Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt classified his wide receiver as “day to day.”

Boldin hasn’t missed a game this season because of the injury. However, he sat out four games in each of the previous two seasons because of various ailments.

Also missing practice for the Cardinals on Wednesday were DT Darnell Dockett (ankle) and LB Gerald Hayes (back). Both defensive starters haven’t missed a game this season.

Cardinals need something to believe in

The phrase “jumped the shark” has certainly “jumped the shark”.

In fact, saying that the phrase “jump the shark” has “jumped the shark” has, indeed, “jumped the shark” as well.

(Note: “Jumping the shark” is a term used to describe a trend that has become played out and no longer relevant. I add this parenthetical after 80 percent of the people in the newsroom hadn’t heard of the expression. Which may prove my point.)

But in the NFL, a tried and true mindset of the last seven years has jumped the shark, and the Arizona Cardinals are finding out too late.

Cards have chance for big streak

It’s easy to romanticize a big victory when the reference point is a history of failure.

The celebration of the Cardinals’ 24-17 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday night is about more than that. The performance was pivotal because it spoke as much about the future as it did the past.

Only two of the Cardinals’ 10 remaining games are against teams with winning records. Their next five opponents – Carolina, Chicago, Seattle, St. Louis and Tennessee – are a combined 7-24. In this bizarre NFL season riddled with have-nots, the Cardinals will benefit from having the 0-7 Rams on their schedule twice and the 0-6 Titans and 1-5
